The United States Patent and Trademark Office on Wednesday formally granted Apple a patent related to a wearable smart ring (SMI) that can sense a user’s physiological conditions, such as heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and more.

In some models, the ring could be equipped with an OLED display backed by indicator lights, and the ring could become a somewhat healthier alternative to the Apple Watch. Apple describes the Ring as possibly providing input structures such as keys, buttons, touch screen inputs, voice inputs, etc.

Furthermore, the ring may retain the input it has observed by force and/or touch, whether it is stationary or motions, speed, direction, force, displacement, or other gestures applied to the input areas, including swipes and , multi-finger input, single or multi-finger touch gestures, tap. This user input can be used to control or modify the operation of the ring.

Reports indicate that the sensor on the ring is connected to an emitter placed inside the housing and configured to emit coherent light towards the user’s skin when the user wears the ring. The electronic device may also include a transmitter functionally coupled to the sensor and configured to transmit physiological data based on electrical signals.
